As a follow up to his 2020 bestseller Black History Saved My Life: How My Viral Hate Crime Led to an Awakening, Mr. Ernest Crim III, a social media influencer with a reach of over 450K and the CEO of Crim’s Cultural Consulting LLC, released his first children’s book, The ABCs of Affirming Black Children, on November 28, 2022. Ernest decided to write this book after releasing his autobiography, after reflecting on the foundational principles that helped him preserve through the implicit and explicit racism he dealt with as a child. Additionally, he saw the urgent need to promote literacy and Black History to a generation of children who have been exposed to increasing levels of trauma and instability educationally.
For instance, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, "reading scores saw their largest decrease in 30 years," during the pandemic, particularly among students of color, who saw "the steepest decreases, widening the racial achievement gap." Likewise, according to EdWeek, 42 states have introduced bills that would prohibit public school curriculums from teaching about race and racism.
However, by reading to our children daily, and exposing them to a wide range of vocabulary words, we can begin to remedy this growing problem. Furthermore, by affirming our children, and teaching them to have racial pride, we will increase the likelihood that they attend college, excel academically, and persevere through racism, according to Stanford and Harvard University.
As such, within the pages of The ABCs of Affirming Black Children, readers will get 26 artists, activists, scientists, and speakers who dared to be great in the face of injustice and adversity to correct the image our children have of themselves. These affirmations and historical facts will build a foundation of confidence and vision that will prepare them for the greatness they are destined to achieve.
