For 17 units, from February through August, I taught a course entitled, 'CRT: An Introduction to Black History' as a way to provide an option for parents to ensure that their child is taught Black History the appropriate way, by a certified teacher, in the midst of CRT bans and the suppression of content (the recordings will be available for purchase at a later date). Now, it's time for the next phase...
Starting September 11th at 5pm CST for teens and adults, and 6pm CST for K-5, the next class will be in session: 'The Black History Book Club - We Read the Books They Ban.'
The first book for our teen/adult session will be 'The Quaking of America' by Resmaa Menakem. For our K-5 session, the first book will be 'All Because You Matter' by Tami Charles.
This is NOT a regular book club. For the teen/adult section, the goal is to empower, educate and strategize ways for us to eradicate systemic racism in our own communities, in addition to reading together. For the K-5 section, students will challenged with questions and text analyses that are aligned with Common Core standards. As a former high school history teacher, my goal will be to prepare them for middle and high school, and build their esteem and expand their career goals.
I look forward to teaching you and your child. Please select the option that works best for you and let me know if you have any questions by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org
*Please note, that not every book we will actually be on a banned list, HOWEVER every book will touch on race and Black History in a way that it would likely be banned in a district or start that has banned CRT.
